Lore

Early Life

Serra was born into a warrior-noble family of Wernixia, a fortified city guarding a pass in the Sederyan mountains. The region was long contested by hornoof raiding parties from the Peryss forest and by incursions from the Holy Empire of Azivnia. Like many nobles of similar status, Serra received an education in martial discipline and tactical command under veteran tutors, showing early aptitude for strategy.

Military Campaigns

As a commander, Serra led several campaigns eastward into Azivnian territory, most notably against Zelat Duras, a prince of the Empire. She is credited with restoring temporary stability to the frontier after personally parlaying with Duras, though the peace was uneasy and short-lived.

Within Wernixia, she commanded peacekeeping forces, suppressing banditry and hornoof raids. During this time the trade in captured hornoofs, particularly through Pyrduna on the river Brar, expanded significantly. Chronicles from the period suggest Serra grew a particular distaste for the hornoofs, often describing them as “mindless, savage creatures”, comparing their worth to that of boggies.

Serra’s Rebellion

By the late reign of King Ortenis, Braryrian suffered famine, corruption, and declining influence abroad. Rumors of endless feasts in the capital contrasted with unrest in the provinces. Discontent sharpened after the assassination of a prominent noble critical of Ortenis, an event widely blamed on the crown. Riots erupted across the kingdom, and the cities of Cirdyna, Bastilon, and Zanna declared independence, while the ancient city of Idos fell under the control of a gladiator revolt.

Serra, already respected as a commander and hailing from a prestigious dynasty, became the figurehead of opposition. Despite early setbacks against royalist forces, her armies achieved a decisive victory that opened the gates of the capital. Accounts differ on the final moments of Ortenis: some claim Serra confronted him directly, while most sources describe Sur Dargus, a longtime royal servant, striking him down before proclaiming Serra queen.

Prince Darelos, the king’s heir, escaped north by sea and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Aftermath and Reign

In the months after her coronation, Serra turned her armies against the breakaway kingdoms of Bastilon, Zanna, and Cirdyna, though the conflict quickly hardened into stalemate. Each of the petty kingdoms maintained claims to the throne of Braryrian, making efforts of unification harder with each battle.

Though Serra is celebrated by some as a restorer of strength, others describe her rule as ruthless. Popular opinion remains divided, with some suggesting the realm was more stable under Ortenis despite his corruption.
